Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, employees were exposed to fire hazards associated with the improper use and placement of asphalt (tar) kettles. a) 9201 Maryland, Niles, Illinois - The asphalt (tar) kettle provided by the employer for employees to use during built-up-roofing operations was utilized on the roof of the 10 story building and was left unattended while being fired by propane. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with The BOCA National Fire Prevention Code/1993, Section F-405.2, Standard for Asphalt (tar) Kettles and prohibit asphalt tar kettles from being left unattended while fired or used inside or on the roof of any structure. b) 9201 Maryland, Niles, Illinois - The employer stored approximately six, 100 Lb LPG cylinders on the roof top of the 10 story building where employees were engaged in built-up- roofing operations. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with the BOCA National Fire Prevention Code/1993, Section F405.4, Standard for the protection and storage of LPG cylinders and prohibit the storage of LPG cylinders upon roof tops. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
