Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard(s) being struck and/or crushed by a vehicle due
to collapse or failure
of the vehicle lift:
a) Huffco, Inc. dba Ziebart Tidy Car - In the Undercoating Spray Area one
employee worked
under a Weaver Twin Post Automotive Lift while performing his undercoating
duties. The
employer failed to maintain and care for the lift to ensure its continued
safe operation. The top
mounting screw on one lift lock was cracked off. The lift was leaking
hydraulic oil on the floor
directly below the lifting cylinders. The low oil shut off was not
operable because the low oil
float was missing.
Among others, one feasible method of abatement would be to maintain the
automotive lift(s) in
accordance with the requirements of ANSI B153.1-1990. Including, but not
limited to the
correcting the following deficiencies noted on the lifts:
1. Replace the Tube and Plunger gaskets on both cylinders.
2. Install a Low Oil Shut Off Float.
3. Replace the cracked capscrew with a new screw.
4. Ensure oil level is at 60 gallons.
Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the
requirements of
29 CFR 1903.19(d).s
