Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire and explosion hazard: a- Laboratory - Employees, attempting to dispose of tetrahydrafuran (THF) which had expired some two years ago, were using an evaporation procedure conducted under a laboratory hood. This procedure may lead to the formation of heat-sensitive peroxides which can explode. Condition noted on or about 3/14/00. One feasible means of abatement, among others, would be to refer the disposal of this chemical to an outside chemical disposal company.
