Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to falling loads and/or falling hoist parts:
a) Assembly Area:  The hoists used in all areas of assembly were not kept
in good repair in that
the following deficiencies were noted:  (1) Load testing was not conducted
with a written report
to confirm the hoist's load rating' (2) The supporting structure (beams)
were not marked with
their load capacity and no rated load tests were conducted with a written
report to confirm the
support structures load rating; (3) the clamp type lifting devices and the
spreader bar lifting
devices were not marked with their weight and lifting capacity and no
rated load tests were
conducted on these devices with a written report to confirm the device
lifting capacity.
Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement
method to
correct this hazard is to develop a preventative maintenance program which
incorporates all
recommendations outlined in the manufacturer's  manuals with written,
signed and dated reports
and also in accordance with ANSI B30.16 in order to ensure a safe and
proper functioning hoist.
