Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that an employee was exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a collapsing automotive lift: a)Worksite, Mechanic's Garage: An employee was working under an automotive lift while the safety catches on the lift were not functioning. Frequent and periodic inspections were not performed on the automotive lift, on or about 6/13/01. Feasible and acceptable methods for correcting this hazard are: 1)Annual inspections by a Qualified Inspector as per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000, Section 5.5. 2)Operator daily inspections as per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000, Section 4.4.4. 3)Establish a periodic preventive maintenance procedure as per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000, Section 6.1.1. NOTE:ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM. See page 2,"Notification of Corrective Action" for instructions.
