Section 50-9-5(A), NMSA 1978 (New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Act): Every employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees. Employees enter the chlorine storage room at the water treatment facility approximately twice a week. The chlorine storage room does not have ventilation or an audible alarm. Employees are exposed to approximately 100 pounds of chlorine gas. NOTE: The Chlorine Institute, paragraphs 7.1 and 7.2, supports the requirements that chlorine stored inside buildings have ground level ventilation and a monitoring device with an audible alarm. FEASIBLE ABATEMENT: Install a ventilation system that can be activated from outside the building prior to going inside. Install an audible alarm. Prepare an emergency action plan to cover actions to be taken in case of chlorine gas leaks. Provide this office a copy of your emergency action plan. Date Corrected Describe Corrective Action :
