Section 50-9-5(A), NMSA 1978 (New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety
Act):  Every
employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of
employment which
are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause
death or serious physical
harm to his employees.
Employees in the custom shop, the spray booth/room, and the laminate shop
are exposed to the
hazards associated with the use of Schedule 40 PVC for the delivery of
compressed air.  Mode
of failure for this type of piping is explosion with sharp projectiles.
The use of Schedule 40 PVC is contrary to: Sections 842.32, 842.43 and
949.52(b) of the
American National Standards Institute/American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ANSI/ASME)
Standards B31.8-1986, Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems
Standard;
American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) D1785-86, Standard
Specifications
for
Polyvinyl Chloride Plastic Pipe, Schedules 40, 80, and 120; and ASTM
D2513-86a, Standard
Specification for Thermoplastic Gas Pressure Piping Systems.
