Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Slips and falls while working/walking on the downstacker units' exiting discharge roller conveyors tracks and narrow tread plates. Employees were also exposed to slips and falls when walking across the narrow tread plates on the tranpsort conveyor, which employees routinely cross. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to increase the width of the tread plates that serve as a walking/working surfaces, in order to make them suitable for employees to use and ensure that employees work/walk on tread plates, not on rollers, following the precepts of ANSI standard B 20.1 - 1990, Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment, in accordance with the following sections: 1. ANSI B20.1-1990, Section 6.11 (b) : Personnel shall not be allowed to walk or step on free turning rollers or wheels. Suitable means such as tread plates can be used between the rollers as a walking surface for designated operators in the performance of their duties. Additional abatement information is required for this item.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employement which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falls, due to working from energized and moving flat-belt conveyors leading to the downstacker unit. Employees routinely walked on the moving conveyor belt to remove scrap material. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1) Compliance with ANSI B20.1-1996, Section 5.12, paragraph (d) which states "no persons shall ride on a conveyor, except on a slow moving assembly conveyor 80 ft/min maximum or on a conveyor that incorporates a station specifically designed for operating personnel." 2) Use of a properly designed tool to remove scrap materials from conveyor belts as prescribed in the Marquip downstacker video training series supplied by the manufacturer. Additional abatement information is required for this item.
