Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees.
a)Employees working on the main pouring line were exposed to the potential
hazard of
explosions and/or fires resulting from molten iron contacting water during
the manual
pouring of molten metal. This is due to leaking roof seams which cause
water to
accumulate on the pouring deck floor.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the
hazard is:
1.To maintain the roof in a condition which would not allow water to enter
the pouring
area and to institute procedures to cease molten metal pouring until floor
areas
are dry.
