Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to: the hazard of being crushed by collapsed automotive lift:
A) On or about 11/06/00: Bay #2
Employee was working underneath car that was elevated by a Globe
Automotive lift (Serial
#55447) that had a hydraulic leak and nonfunctional safety lock.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO:
Ensure that automotive lifts are regularly inspected.  If any hazardous
conditions, such as leaking
hydraulic fluid or a nonworking safety lock is discovered then take the
lift out of service until
the cause of the condition is determined and appropriately repaired by
qualified
automotive lift
service personnel.   Reference American National Standard/ Automotive Lift

Requirements for Operation,
Inspection and Maintenance." Section 4.5.
ABATEMENT VERIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED.
