Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries from the
collapse of metal plate
wood roof trusses that were not braced to prevent this exposure:
a)  On site at 2626 Bearss Ave., Tampa, FL  33624 - This employer was the
controlling
authority who hired and overseen the framing operations on site.
Employees of the
company that were hired had erected 38 metal plate wood roof trusses, each
52 feet in
length, and had installed only one lateral brace on each side.  While the
employees were
standing, several unbraced trusses up, they struck the erected trusses
causing 36 of the
trusses to collapse onto three employees resulting in injuries, on or
about 05/24/00.
Note:  Abatement
Among other methods, three feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct this
hazard is to:
1)  Use trained personnel or provide training to ensure that each employee
acquires the knowledge and skills of truss erection and the installation of
temporary bracing during the process of installing metal plate connected
wood
trusses.
2)  Follow the practices for handling, installing, and bracing of metal
plate connected wood roof trusses as detailed in HIB-91 from the Truss
Plate Institute.
3)  Posts a copy of the truss warning poster for the employees along with
trained
