Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of a crushing injury when supporting
vertical stacks of
stone slabs by hand:
a) Employees of Ryan and Company, Inc., at 10962 Pikes Peak Drive, Parker,
Colorado,
were exposed to crushing hazards when unloading stone slabs from closed
sided trailers.
Employees stood in front of the vertical stack, and supported it by hand,
while the bracing
was removed to facilitate moving individual slabs to the rear of the
trailer.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is as follows:
1) Institute and enforce a policy in which employees are prohibited from
standing in the
danger zone of unstable and/or hand supported stone slabs.  This could be
accomplished by
requiring employees to stand at each end of the vertical slabs, and
support the stack by
holding a brace or board between them.
