Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards and/or the hazard of dropped loads: (a)Barnum Printing and Publishing,at 6899 Grove Street, Denver, CO 80221: The hoist on the Goss Suburban printing press did not contain a marking stating its rated load, nor did it have a warning label displaying information concerning safe operating procedures. Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter"). Abatement note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is stated in ASME B30.16-1993, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers - An American National Standard - Safety Standard for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings: paragraphs 16-1.1.1 and 16-1.1.4: Paragraph 16-1.1.1 Rated Load: The rated load shall be marked on the hoist or load block. Paragraph 16-1.1.4 Warnings: (b) All electric or air-powered hoists shall have affixed to the hoist, load block, or controls, a label or labels displaying information concerning operating procedures as follows: (1) the word WARNING or other legend designed to bring the label to the attention of an operator; (2) cautionary language against: (a) lifting more than rated load; (b) operating hoist when load is not centered under hoist; (c) operating hoist with twisted, kinked, or damaged chain or rope; (d) operating damaged or malfunctioning hoist; (e) lifting people or loads over people; (f) operating a rope hoist with a rope that is not properly seated in its groove; (g) removing or obscuring warning label.g
