Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a), Annotated Code of Maryland: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:01/11/01 Location:Laser Room Equipment:Elcede LCS 160 CO2 Laser System Condition:The operator performed die cutting of 5/8 inch seven layer maple boards using a CO2 laser system which operated at 10.6 nanometers which could result in localized tissue destruction from intense radiation due to alteration of the original design by addition of a plexiglass door that could affect sheilding properties and allow access during operation. Among others, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop a laser safety hazard program with a laser safety officer with the knowledge and responsibility of performing the functions of the program; perform a hazard evaluation which identifies the magnitude of exposure; and develop exposure control methods through the use of engineering and/or administrative controls, including the use of personal protective equipment, to mitigate exposures.
