Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck-by falling boxes/packages: a) Conveyor/Slide Area - Throughout the facility employees working on the walkway between two conveyors are exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling boxes/packages weighing up to 165 lbs. On 10/19/2000 an employee was covered almost to his knees with boxes/packages that had fallen off the conveyor. ABATEMENT NOTES: AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1) Control conveyors and loading of conveyors so that boxes/packages do not pile up and overflow the sides of the conveyor. 2) Ensure that all conveyors have adequate side protection to prevent boxes/packages from falling. 3) Follow the requirements set forth by American National Standards Institute Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment (ANSI B20.1- 1972), section 5.14. b) Conveyor/Slide Area - Throughout the facility employees working on the walkway between two conveyors are exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling boxes/packages weighing up to 165 lbs. There are 4 emergency stop buttons on each conveyor. The employees walk along this walkway and are not always in the area of an emergency stop button. ABATEMENT NOTES: AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1) Equip the length of the walkway with pull cords or similar emergency stopping devices as prescribed by ANSI B20.1-1972, section 5.15. Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date and method of abatement, and states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
