Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to being struck by loads being handled by hoists due to failure of
shop made lifting
slings:
a) Shopmade two-legged wire rope slings were used throughout the
production area to
handle product of various sizes and weights.  Wire rope clips were used in
the formation
of sling eyes for the attachment of plate hooks as well as to form a
"master link" type
eye for attachment of the sling to the hook of the hoist.
ABATEMENT NOTE:  One feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard
is to remove
the shopmade slings from service and replace same with purchased slings
which would meet the
production application of the facility.
