Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
a)Employees of Mississippi River Construction were exposed to hazards such
as,
but not limited to falls and being crushed from collapsing trusses during
the
roofing and sheathing installation at the site of a new retail store on
Illinois Hwy.
111 in Wood River, Illinois on or before September 29, 2003.  The methods
of
contruction and bracing of roof trusses were not followed to prevent them
from
collapsing during periods of high winds prior to completion of the
sheathing.
Lateral bottom chord bracing lapped over two trusses, diagonal braces
every ten
truss spaces on the bottom chord, and bracing on the top chord of the
trusses was
not used to stabilize the trusses while sheathing was being installed.
One method of abatement among others would be to follow the
recommendations of the Truss
Plate Institute HIB-91 Summary Sheet or the information on truss erection
provided by the
manufacturer at the time of delivery.
