Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the operation of an underhung crane system with a pendant control box that was modified to not allow push buttons to return to the off position when pressure was released by the operator: The employer failed to ensure that the 10 ton Gaffey underhung crane, serial #2939- CCI, located in the south bay of the New Shop conformed to ANSI B30.11-1980 in that the reset push button control was inoperable. The condition exposed employees to hazards associated with handling suspended loads. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard included removing the underhung crane from service when conditions violated recommendations outlined in the manufacturer's manuals or ANSI B30.11-1980.
