Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards resulting from lack of training in maintenance of spraying areas: (a)In the spray booth area, employees were not trained to recognize and correct maintenance issues involving the ventilation system which helps minimize accumulation of flammable atmospheres in the paint booth. Employees were not aware that the screen for the ventilation exhaust outlet must be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent poor air circulation. In addition, employees were not aware of the hazards created by blocking the make-up air vents in the booth. One feasible means of abatement for this hazard, among others, would be to follow the guidelines found in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 33 Chapter 16, Section 1.
