Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of roof collapse: (a)Part Storage Area: On or about March 14, 2001 and at times prior thereto, employees working within this area were exposed to the an unstable roof with visibly deteriorated structural members. The roof had a snow load and the structure was sagging and had temporary braces installed to shore up the rafters. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO REPLACE THE ROOF STRUCTURE AND DESIGN THE ROOF IN ACCORDANCE WITH SOUND ENGINEERING GUIDANCE; SUCH AS, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE SECTION ON ENGINEERING, QUALITY AND DESIGN REQUIREMENTS FOR ROOF STRUCTURES WITH SNOW LOADS." Note: Abatement certification and supporting documentation are required for this item.
