Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: (a) Plant, South, Center And North Bays- The jib hoist hooks were not provided with safety latches. Employees were exposed to the hazard(s) of loads fall from the jib hoists during their operation. (b) Plant, North Bay- The one ton Abell-Howe jib hoist hook was not provided with safety latch and the jib hoist was not balanced (leveled). The jib hoist movement was not controlled. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to include, but not be limited to the following: Conform to The American National Standard Institute "" ANSI B30.16-1973 "Overhead Hoists", including conducting frequent and annual inspections of the overhead hoists and maintenance of equipment. Abatement certification only is required for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19 paragraph (c).
