North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety
and Health Act of North Carolina:  The employer did not furnish to
each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees:
a)at jobsite, 8/3/00; employee was seriously injured during
a robbery/shooting; employer did not assure that work
areas and employees were protected against violent
assaults and workplace violence hazards.
b)at jobsite, 9/21/00; employee was seriously injured
during a robbery/shooting; employer did not assure that
work areas and employees were protected against violent
assaults and workplace violence hazards.
Among other methods to correct these hazards is to:
1.Install and maintain working, video surveillance
equipment/cameras with taping capabilities, and monitors.
2. Install and maintain silent intrusion/hold-up alarms in
strategic locations.
3. Prevent entry of unauthorized persons into enclosed
employee/security area, by keeping door locked.
4. Close all other openings above security glass of enclosure and
minimize size of opening in front glass, or install push-out
drawer on inside as well to prevent weapons from being fired
through them.
5. Increase visibility from store to the surroundings, such as
the street, either through unblocked windows, convex mirrors,
or closed circuit TV monitors.
6. Decrease and limit the amount of cash on hand by using drop or
time activated safes and advertising this fact with prominent
signs at the store.
7. Encourage employees to report suspicious activities, persons,
or vehicles to the local police department.
8. Hire more off duty uniformed police officers or armed security
officers.
9. Increase staff to more than one employee at all times
especially at nighttime hours.
10. Train all employees in robbery procedures, conflict
management, and emergency procedures.
