Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees
in that employees
were exposed to ignition of dust:
a)Plant, Lab Area #4:  All sources of ignition were not eliminated where an
employee was using a Stainless Steel Fluid Bed Dryer (model #wsg-120) to
sift
powders into a 10 - Glatt 120 kg SS product bowl.  During the transfer
process
ignition of the dust occurred resulting in a flash fire, on or about
10/3/01.
Abatement Note:
1.A feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to perform a complete
hazard
analysis to identify, evaluate, and control the hazards involved such as,
but not
limited to, sources of ignition, by methods including, but not limited to
grounding, bonding, and electrically connecting all equipment.
2.A feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to develop a standard
operating
procedure (SOP) for the mixing, sifting, and transferring of powders from
the
machine unit and to train all employees accordingly.
Note:
Materials Processing Technology Inc. was previously cited for a voilation
of this
Occupational Safety and Health Standard Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational
Safety and Health Act of 1970 which was contained in OSHA inspection number
302775242, Citation Number 1, Item number 7 issued on 11/9/99, with respect
to a workplace located at 95 Prince Street. This citation became a final
order on
1/4/00.
