Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees could not safely evacuate the building in an emergency because of over crowding. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to comply with the occupancy limits as specified by the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Life Safety Code, Section 101-27-1.7 which limits the number of occupants to 1 per 100 square feet of floor area. LOCATION: FIFTH FLOOR, 370 MAIN STREET, WORCESTER MA. THERE WERE 175 EMPLOYEES ON THE FIFTH FLOOR WHICH HAS AN AREA OF 15,000 SQUARE FEET. THIS IS IN EXCESS OF 1 PERSON PER 100 SQUARE FEET WHICH ALLOWS FOR A SAFE EVACUATION IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY.
