General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries while unloading 5 granite slabs. On or about March 8, 2003 two employees were preparing to unload 5 granite slabs (approximately ten feet by six feet and weighing approximately 700-800 lbs. apiece) from the rear of a truck. After cutting the two vertical support members, the granite slabs shifted and fell pinning both workers against the side of the truck. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1) Implement safe work procedures for the unloading of stone slabs from a delivery vehicle; 2) The granite slabs remain inside the shipping package while being unloaded; 3) Provide secondary bracing before removing the shipping brace. Abatement certification and documentation required for this item.
