employee was permitted to ride on the step above the tracks of a JOHN
DEERE, Model 270LC,
Hydraulic Excavator, exposing the employee to the hazard of being struck
by, crushed by, or
thrown off the hydraulic excavator:
(a)City of Fulton, Mississippi, Surface Water Supply - Phase 1, Spring
Street
Extension Area - An employee was not protected from the hazard of being
struck by
and/or crushed by a hydraulic excavator.  The employee was permitted to
ride on the
step above the tracks of a JOHN DEERE, Model 270LC, hydraulic excavator,
while the
excavator was digging an excavation.
Among others, one feasible and useful abatement method to correct this
hazard
is to:
(1)  Follow the requirements of the Operator's Manual for the John Deere,
Model
270LC Excavator.  Section 5, Safety, Page 05-11, 'Keep Riders off Machine',
states, "Only allow the operator on the machine.  Keep riders off.  Riders
on
machines are subject to injury such as being struck by foreign objects and
being
thrown off the machine."
