Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to the presence of fungi:
Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico:
El patrono no
proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que esten
causando o que
puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados
estaban expuestos
a la presencia de hongos:
a)On 1/14/04 two employees were working as tellers while two area air
monitoring
in the cash register area results in an exposure of 1400 colony-forming
units per
cubic meter of air (cfu/m3) of aspergillus versicolor.  Over 1000 cfu/m3
is an
indicator of contamination as per ACGIH studies.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard is:  cleaning and disinfect and/or replace all the contaminated
counters, shelfs, walls, and all other equipment.  The cleaning shall be
make with
a vacuum cleaner with a filter with high efficiency and the persons who
make this
job shall be protected with an N-95 respirator, goggle/eye protection and
gloves.
The disinfect amphil in aerosol is excellent to eliminate the fungi.
Another
disinfectants are Lysol or Chlorine.
a)El 14/1/04 dos empleados estuvieron trabajando como cajeros mientras dos
muestreos del area de caja  resultaron en una exposicion de 1400 unidades
formando colonias por metro cubico de aire (cfu/m3) de la especie
"aspergillus
versicolor".  Sobre 1000 cfu/m3 es un indicador de contaminacion segun
estudios
de la ACGIH.
Entre otros metodos, un metodo razonable y aceptable de corregir este
riesgo
es:
limpieza y desinfeccion y/o reemplazar todas las ventanillas, anaqueles,
paredes
y equipos contaminados.  La limpieza debe ser hecha con una aspiradora con
un
filtro de alta eficiencia y las personas que realicen este trabajo deben
ser
protegidas con un respirador (al menos N-95), proteccion para los ojos y
guantes.
El desinfectante  amphil en aerosol es excelente para eliminar hongos.
Otros
desinfectantes son Lysol o Cloro."ctantes
