employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to coming into contact with a running chain saw:
Location: 11 Imperial Lane, Chestnut Ridge, NY
On or about: 7/18/01
a) An employee was operating a Stihl 020T Gas Powered Chain Saw, while
trimming a tree.
The employee was using only one hand to hold and operate the chain saw
during the tree
trimming operation.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO:
1. Retrain employees in the safe operating procedures to follow while
operating a chain saw
during tree trimming operations as stipulated in the manufacturer's
manual, including but not
limited to the use of both hands; and
2. Enforce the procedures described in the manufacturer's manual for the
safe operation of chain
saws.
Note: The employer is required to submit abatement certification and
documentation for
this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
