Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling approximately 30 feet from an unsecured and inadequately guarded steel platform: a)700 Bedford Road -South side of the bldg - Two employees were installing metal sheeting onto the face of the building while standing on the elevated steel work platform placed on a Lull Highlander Rough Terrain Forklift, Model #844C; observed on or about 4/19/02. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: (1) Follow the safety procedures in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) B56.6-1992, Para. 5.15 items (a) through (y) for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks. (2) Secure the steel work platform onto the forks before it is elevated. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
