Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being hit/crushed from falling loads. a.Manufacturing area: Employees were exposed to the hazards of falling loads due to the potential failure of the below-the-hook lifting device(s) on the 5 ton spanmaster at work center 520. The capacity of the below-the-hook lifting device(s) was not known, there were no markings, the device(s) was not load tested and periodic inspections were not documented/maintained. b.Manufacturing area: Employees were exposed to the hazards of falling loads due to the potential failure of the below-the-hook lifting device(s) on crane 4B radiator installation station, in the small engine layout air compressor assembly area. The capacity of the below-the-hook lifting device(s) was not known, there were no markings, the device(s) was not load tested and periodic inspections were not documented/maintained. ABATEMENT NOTE: Crane and hoist systems to include below-the-hook lifting devices must be installed, used, and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations or be certified by a person competent in crane hoist systems and structural design to ensure they are installed and used properly to support anticipated uses/loads. ABATEMENT METHOD: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with ANSI/ASME B30.20 - 1985.
