General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of PVC plastic pipe carrying compressed air and exploding and shattering into shards and impacting into employees. A.) On or about 10-2-01, in the wax disc area and the sonic welding room, the employer was using PVC pipe to transport compressed air into areas where needed. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC pipe with an impact resistant Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe. This pipe is recommended by the plastic pipe institute for this purpose.
