Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): Annotated Code of
Maryland: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to
employees:
(a)Date of Violation:On or about 10/02/01
Condition:Employees operated overhead cranes using hand held radio controls
without any training in the operation of the cranes and the hand held
controls.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to develop and implement a training program to ensure only trained and
authorized
employees operate the overhead cranes in accordance with the manufacture's
guidelines.
(b)Date of Violation:On or about 10/02/01
Condition:Employees using overhead cranes to move and stack coils of steel
and
sheets of steel were not trained in recognition and avoidance of hazards
associated with placing themselves in potential pinch point areas while
moving and placing loads; nor were they trained how or provided the
means to safely access suspended loads in order to release them.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to develop and implement training to prevent employees from working
between the
suspended load and a fixed object and to prevent employees from climbing
onto steel coils,
sheets of steel or other objects in order to release the load.
Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of programs,
training
certification, etc.) is required for this item.
