Condition:The control panel for the conveyor, including the stop button,
was
located appoximately 100' from the feed hopper.  The conveyor was
not guarded, and the control panel was not manned while it was in
operation.  Employees clearing blockages in the hopper were exposed
to the hazard of falling into the hopper and into the approximate 14"
diameter, 15' long screw conveyer.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to correct this hazard is to install an emergency stop device in the
immediate vicinity of
the feed hopper in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers, ASME
B20.1-993, Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment.
