Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:12/14/01 Location:Finish Feed Bay Equipment:Martin Screw Conveyor, Company #58 Condition:The control panel for the conveyor, including the stop button, was located appoximately 100' from the feed hopper. The conveyor was not guarded, and the control panel was not manned while it was in operation. Employees clearing blockages in the hopper were exposed to the hazard of falling into the hopper and into the approximate 14" diameter, 15' long screw conveyer. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to correct this hazard is to install an emergency stop device in the immediate vicinity of the feed hopper in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME B20.1-993, Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment.
