Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazard of falling into an open elevator hoistway, approximately 10 feet to the bottom of the pit, or being caught between the ascending car platform and the wall due to the lack of interlocked hoistway doors on the 1st floor. Feasible and acceptable means of abatement include: Install electro mechanical interlocks on the 1st.and 2nd.floor hoistway doors This method of abatement is listed in the following reference: ASME A17.1 1996: Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. Violation observed on or about 11/20 & 11/21/01.
