Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees exposed to the
crushing hazard of working on or near automotive lifts where the employer
failed to ensure that
the vehicle was prevented from rolling and to ensure that damaged and/or
eroded components
are maintained and/or replaced.
Feasible abatement methods include, but are not limited to, following the
guidelines outlined in
the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Lift Institute
(ALI) ALOIM - 2000
standard, "Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection and Maintenance
for Automotive
Lifts."; review and implement (where appropriate) the information
contained in ALI SM01-1,
2001, "Lifting it Right - a Safety Manual from the Automotive Lift
Institute."; and pertinent
guidelines/information provided in automobile trade association literature
or
related insurance
inspections.
