Section 40.1-51.1(a), Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. Employees were exposed to serious burns from molten steel slag while connecting the slag pot to the slag pot crane by walking on the top of spilled slag. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to engineer a method to connect the slag pot to the crane by not exposing the employee to molten slag or fall hazards.
