General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees working in the Chemical Wash area were exposed to the hazards of hydrogen sulfide gas releases: (a)On January 16, 2002, there was no system in place to warn employees of hydrogen sulfide releases in the Chemical wash area. Hydrogen sulfide gas was formed when sulfuric acid was added to the effluent in the drain system. There were no hydrogen sulfide gas monitors installed in the chemical wash area to alert employees of the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas at a predetermined level less than the allowable limit. Among others, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to install hydrogen sulfide monitors in the chemical wash area.
