Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnished employment and place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by a cable which slipped off the unprotected sheave. Site: 420 West 20th Street, New York, N.Y. On or about December 11, 2001 a)At the work site: An elevator mechanic who was installing cables, was struck by a cable which slipped off the unprotected sheave. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to comply with the American National Standards Safety Codes for Elevators Dumbwaiters Escalators and Moving walks stipulated by the American National Standards Institute (ASME)-ASME A17.1-2000. Section 2.10.1 Page # 38. NOTE: BECAUSE ABATEMENT OF THIS VIOLATION IS ALREADY DOCUMENTED IN THE INSPECTION CASE FILE, THE EMPLOYER NEED NOT SUBMIT CERTIFICATION OR DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT OF THIS VIOLATION AS NORMALLY REQUIRED BY 29 CFR 1903.19.
