Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of a Pentane gas explosion and/or fire: (a) Employees who worked at Advance Foam Plastics, Inc. were exposed to the hazard of a Pentane gas explosion and/or fire from the off-gassing of Pentane in the Foam Expander/Molding Area. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to prepare written documentation for the proper electrical classification of this area, per the 1999 National Electric Code (NEC) recommended requirement [500-3.(b)], which states "Documentation. All areas designated as hazardous (classified) locations shall be properly documented. This documentation shall be available to those authorized to design, install, inspect, maintain, or operate electrical equipment at the location." Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
