General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a. At the construction site of the Hernando Pain Clinic, located at 4913 Mariner Blvd in Spring Hill, Florida, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck and crushed by inadequately braced wood trusses. The metal plate connected wood roof trusses were installed without bracing as required by HIB-91 Summary Sheet Commentary and Recommendations for Handling, Installing and Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses. The trusses were installed by using 17.5 inch 2X4 wooden spacers with no lateral, diagonal and ground bracing. One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to install roof trusses in accordance the Truss Plate Institutes recommendations which are contained in "HIB-91, Recommendations For Handling, Installing and Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses". The truss manufacturer provides a copy of the "HIB-91 Summary Sheet" with the delivery of the truss information and their Design Criteria refers to the HIB-91 for proper handling, installing and bracing. The Standard Building Code also refers to the HIB-91 for handling, installing and bracing of metal plate connected wood trusses. ABATEMENT VERIFICATION REQUIRED
