employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that:
Employees were exposed to explosive fragmentation hazards from plastic PVC
pipe being
used to distribute compressed air throughout the woodworking shop area.
Employees were
exposed to the hazard of working around lengths of plastic PVC pipe being
used to distribute
compressed air (at 100 psi) throughout the shop. This practice is not
recommended by the Plastic
Pipe Institute and prohibited by ANSI/ASME B31.8 1986 Gas Transmission and
Distribution
Piping System Standard.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard
is to replace the PVC piping with a type of pipe that is approved for
transporting compressed
gases in above ground locations such as metal pipe.
29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the
abatement of the
above violation is complete.
