Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by unsecured trusses: (a)Building #6, The Village, Beaver, PA; On or about May 12, 2003 employees were attempting to set five 9:12 pitched trusses in wind gusts of 15-35 m.p.h. which were not secured and/or braced; 15, 9:12 pitched trusses on the wall plates did not have any exterior/interior ground bracing, were only nailed to the wall plate with one nail on one side only and there was an insufficient amount of lateral bracing to stabilize the 15 trusses. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to follow the procedures outlined in the Handling, Installing and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses HIB-91 Truss Plate Institute, dated 1991.
