What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed
to the hazard of being splashed
by molten metal and burned:
a)On July 26, 2002, rain water leaked from the roof into a crucible
containing molten metal, causing the
material to be vigorously expelled from the crucible. The molten metal
splashed onto and burned one
employee trying to evacuate the area.
Among others, one feasible abatement method to correct this hazard is to
conduct periodic inspections
of the roof to identify potential leaks and repair as soon as possible to
assure that water is not
introduced into the furnace (crucible) area.
