furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or a serious physical harm to
employees, in that
employees operating the Presto Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor were
exposed to potential
crushing injuries from the improperly guarded conveyor:
a)On or about October 9, 2002, and at times prior, employees were exposed
to serious
crushing injuries as well as fall hazards when operating the Presto
Vertical Reciprocating
Conveyor.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to enclose all moving parts of the conveyor and to ensure that the
doors at each manual
loading and unloading station are appropriately interlocked so that they
can be opened only
when the carrier has stopped at that level as detailed in the American
National
Standard
(ANSI) Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment (ASME
B20.1-2000)
