Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees working where there was insufficient lighting were exposed to the potential hazards of contacting acids and corrosives from leaking or spilled hazardous chemicals: a) Warehouse - Lighting in the chemical aisle was measured with a light meter at 3 to 10 foot candles of light where hazardous chemicals were stored, such as, but not limited to muriatic acid, sulfuric acid and corrosives such as Alki Foam and Pool Cleaner, on or about 5/7/02. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install lighting which is in accordance with ANSI A11.l 1973 Industrial Lighting, Table 1, which lists the level of illumination currently recommended for storage rooms or warehouses as: rough bulky - 10 foot-candles; medium - 20 foot- candles; and fine - 50 foot-candles; and under Materials Handling, picking stock - 30 foot-candles.
