Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazards of explosion from the oxygen bottles
which were
located in a tin shed in the parking lot area off the back of the building
a)Oxygen bottles were being stored in a tin shed located in the parking
lot area
off the back of the building and the employer did not have physical
barriers
around the shed to protect the oxygen bottles from being struck by
vehicles.
National fire code 55: 2-1.6.1(c) states that compressed and liquified
gases in
portable cylinders stored outdoors shall be provided with physical
protection
from vehicle damage.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct
this
hazard are
to:
(1) Install Physical Barriers or guards around the shed to prevent
vehicles from
running into the shed and making contact with the oxygen bottles.
(2) Moving the Oxygen bottles to an area where contact with vehicular
traffic would
not be possible.
