Section 5(a)(1) of the occupational safety and health act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to slipping on ice and snow: Job Site: a) A truck crane was set up and blocking the walkway to the front entrance forcing foot travel into the 2 feet deep snow. b) Snow had not been adequately cleared from the site to define walkways leading to work areas and building entrances. c) Employees were exposed to slipping hazards where snow and ice had not been adequately cleared and/or treated in work areas and walkways at several locations within the building. d) lengths of 1 inch fuel gas lines for portable heaters presented tripping hazards in the hallways. One method of abatement, among others, could have been to remove snow and ice from the work and travel areas with an ice-melt product before allowing work to continue.
