Section 5(a)(1) of the occupational safety and health act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards from falling structural steel which did not have a load rating at least equal to that of the hoist being used. In addition, employees were exposed to struckby hazards from shifting or unstable rigging: Location: 7th floor, at 9 line and D line, 32 Fruit Street, Boston, MA. On 03/05/03 two employees were using a hand powered chain hoist to level the truss girder when the steel to which the hoist was attached collapsed. In addition, the hook was attached to the load without the use of a sling or other acceptable method of attachment. Also, an insufficient number of bolts were installed on the truss girders. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to use a hydraulic jack on fully developed structural steel instead of a hand chain powered hoist.d
