Section 5(a)(1) of the occupational safety and health act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to falling objects due to the lack of maintaining steel storage
racks.
(a) Location - Shipping Area
On or about 04/09/03, employees were exposed to the hazard of falling
materials stored
overhead due to lack of maintenance for storage racks.
Feasible abatement methods include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ensure that adequate clearance in front of racks is maintained for
mechanical equipment to
safely withdraw materials on pallets from the rack.
2. Implement an inspection program and a periodic planned maintenance to
ensure the integrity
of the racks.
3. Ensure employees are following a preventative maintenance and
inspection program for steel
storage racks.
4. Encourage employees to report any damage to racks at time of incident,
specifically if damage
due to mechanical equipment.
5. Repair any defective components of storage racks in a timely manner.
