AS 18.60.075(a): Safe employment. An employer shall do everything necessary to protect the life, health, and safety of employees including, but not limited to: Furnishing to each employee employment and a place of employment that are free from recognized hazards that, in the opinion of the commissioner, are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employees. EXAMPLE: BP did not provide a safe and healthy workplace for its employees, contractors and sub-contractors when: BP employees approved a hot work permit for a welding procedure without a low pressure gauge in the nitrogen purging operation. A BP Purging document addresses proper procedures. No person was effectively assigned, or no mechanical system was in place to monitor the operation during the course of the day after initial hot work permit approval.
